It's called NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals (NPH) because it's a group of hospitals that specialize in treating people who have both serious acute psychiatric events and other medical and/or neurological problems. It's hard for people who need help with their mental health and/or physical health to go to a psychiatric hospital. At the same time, they're too ill to go to a traditional medical hospital. If you're 55 years old and have AIDS, you might need to go to a NeuroPsychiatric Hospital. This is because you're dangerous to yourself and others, and you're also very psychotic. Then there's a person who is 20 years old and has extreme mood swings, is very violent, and has Autism. There would be a third example of an 85-year-old who has a lot of dementia, is violent to other people, has a lot of kidney disease, and diabetes.
Hospitals that specialize in psychiatry and general medicine are called NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals. Our patients need full-time care from both medical specialties, and they are part of a rapidly growing group of people who don't have many or any options for treatment. As a result, the emergency care system for other people is clogged up while the NPH patient doesn't get any real treatment at all. People who need help from NPH can also get help from other psychiatric hospitals and from nursing homes, as well as law enforcement. Because these hospitals serve as a safety net for their local communities, all referrals come from the community, not from a doctor. It includes people who play for the NFL, as well as professionals and people who are homeless. Those who have these illnesses don't have to be from a certain group to get them. They can also ruin the lives of anyone who has them and their families.
