Culminating at 5,895 meters, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the “7 summits”. Kilimanjaro once lay within Kenya's borders. Legend has it that Queen Victoria gifted the mountain to Kaiser Wilhelm in 1848 because he felt it was unfair that Kenya had the two highest peaks. Since 1889, several attempts have been made to determine the exact height of the mountain. The 2008 Kilimanjaro Accurate Height Measurement Expedition used GPS and gravimetric methods to produce the value of 5,891.8 m (19,330 ft). Due to Kilimanjaro's equatorial position and high altitude, almost all types of climates on Earth are represented, including a year-round snow peak.
This journey
is not easy! Includes consecutive days of high altitude trekking, sometimes over rough terrain. We expect all trekkers to have a high level of fitness so that they can better cope with the altitude and physically demanding nature of the trek. Our route is tried and tested: Lemosho's longer routes are suitable for those who want more time to acclimatize while climbing and we also have the option of climbing Mount Meru to pre-acclimatize. However, we cannot predict how each team member will react to altitude, so we ask all participants to be well prepared for the request for this trek (which means training!). At The Altitude Gym we have a great pre-acclimatization opportunity and all trekkers must commit to an agreed training program to make our collective journey a success.

Day 0: Arrival
Pickup from Kilimanjaro Airport (or other specified location) and transfer to your hotel for equipment check and team briefing. Anything else needed can be organized in the company's tool shop. The rest of the day is free. Overnight at the Parkview Inn.

Day 1: Londorossi gate to MtiMkubwa camp; Difference in altitude: 2,100 m - 2,750 m.
Distance: 6 km; Walking time:
 4 - 5 hours; Habitat: rainforest.
We leave
Moshi for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 4 hours, where you will complete the entry formalities. Then drive up the Lemosho trail. Upon arrival at the trail, we have lunch and then begin our hike through the dense rainforest to the MtiMkubwa (Big Tree) camp.

Day 2: from MtiMkubwa camp to Shira camp 1; Altitude: 2,750 m - 3,480 m.
Distance: 8 km; Walking time
 6 - 8 hours; Habitat: heather.
We
continue the path that leads out of the rainforest and into a savannah of tall grass, heather and volcanic rock covered with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira ridge before gently descending to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo across the plateau is incredible. Day 3: Shira Camp 1 to Moir Hut; Altitude: 3505m - 4206m.
Distance:
 11km; Walking time: 5 - 7 hours; Habitat: Moor.
We
explore the Shira Plateau for a full day. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills, making this an excellent opportunity to acclimate. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on Earth.

As we walk, our direction changes to the southeast towards Lava Tower, nicknamed "Shark's Tooth". Shortly after, we reach the second fork, which brings us close to the Arrow Glacier at 4,877m. We now continue to the Barranco refuge at 3,960m above sea level. Although we end the day at the same altitude where we started, this day is very important for acclimatization and helps prepare for the summit day.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp; Altitude: 3,960m - 4,035m.
Distance:
5km; Walking time: 4 - 5 hours; Habitat: Alpine desert. Our first challenge is a run and run on the volcanic rock of the 366m high Barranco wall. We continue towards the Barafu refuge. At this point we have completed the southern loop, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we camp, rest, enjoy an early dinner and prepare for the day at the summit. Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are visible on this side.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Point to Mweka Camp; Altitude: 4640m - 5895m - 3080m.
Distance:
 17km; Walking time: 11 – 14 hours; Habitat: Arctic.
Around
midnight, we put on layers of clothes and begin our climb to the top. We head northwest and climb through large boulders to Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically difficult part of the trek. At Stella Point (5,669m) we stop for a short rest and are rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you've ever seen.
From
Stella Point we still have an hour before reaching the top. At Uhuru Peak you have reached the highest point of Kilimanjaro and the African continent. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from above. From the top, we descend and continue straight to the Mweka Hut campsite, where we stop in Barafu for lunch. Mweka Camp is located in the highest forest. Later in the evening we enjoy our last dinner in the mountains and a well deserved night's rest.
